Artexpo New York Spotlight Exhibitor, Resurrect Studio, consists of Co-Founders, Jean Davis and Nancy Wu. The 47th edition of Artexpo New York runs from April 4-7 at Pier 36.

Q: Introduce yourself — who you are and what is your vision as an artist?

A: We are Resurrect Studio Co-Founders, Jean Davis and Nancy Wu. Having met 8 years ago, we feel like we are 8 as well. Accordingly, we don’t think of ourselves as taking full responsibility for the formation of our glasswork, but rather, we are vehicles for what the art has come to be. We journey to a century-old landfill in Brooklyn to pick up glass fragments percolating into the bay. Our art is an excavation of the collective unconscious from Victorian-era New York City seen in today’s light.

Q: What is your background?

A: JD: I’m an artist in my heart and an art therapist in my psyche. I’ve worked for decades as a licensed art therapist in medical and psychiatric facilities as well as in private practice. I’ve been making art my whole life and did my undergraduate studies at the School of Visual Arts. Through a long commitment to art and art therapy, I’m now a Full-Time Professor at Pratt Institute, a therapist in private practice, and with gratitude — Co-Founder of Resurrect Studio with Nancy.

NW: I have an English literature degree with a master’s in architecture. I began oil painting shortly after my daughter passed suddenly in 2016 at age 13.  To keep my chin up, I surrendered to a variety of things to heal me. Making art was one of them. Jean helped usher me through the unimaginable. Our families grew closer through the grieving process and the healing space that emerged evolved into Resurrect Studio.

Q: What is your work philosophy and how does that impact your work?

A: JD: Many technical approaches are effective when conducting psychotherapy, but it’s the clients we love that are helped the most. This is also true when making art. When I put my full heart into creating, the work transcends me.

NW: Our art benefits from the gusto of 2 creatives with post-menopausal zest. In our collaborations, we’ve noticed that Jean tends to create innards, and I love to ground them and consider how they touch the sky. We’re both ever mindful of capturing negative space as well as a landing pad for the eye to be still. This is essential to an artist’s hospitality; they must allow the viewer to just be.

Music and dance have a group component built into them, but less so in the visual arts. Two sets of eyes are better than one in this kind of art making especially when we can grab a critique. When it gets to be too much admin and not enough making, one of us will call pencils down, turn on some dance tunes, and remind the other to “get clinking.”

Q: What artist(s) inspire you?

A: JD: I love art that takes me away from me! Some artists and their work do this for me and each time I return I see through a new lens. There are many ways to travel through inner and outer space.

NW:  A resourceful sensibility inspires me, not necessarily precedence.  It’s the skillset for making fried rice from a wilted scallion, rice, and an egg.  Missionaries inspire me with their can-do attitude. For example, we have a nun friend, Ces, capable of fixing most things with #4 wire and/or duct tape.

My father is a tenor who trained in Rome.  Upon seeing a playful accordionist at our wedding, he launched into a duet, a fantastical display people still marvel at today.  The sincerity and spontaneity of his artistry have affected me profoundly time and again.  Retrospectively, my mother coined healthy neglect as her parenting style in raising 6 kids.  We were given ample space to be imaginative, yet I think we can all agree we were never far from her mind’s eye.

Although my bookcases are packed, for inspiration I rely on my bike to marvel at the beauty of trees in the clouds, something Jean and I do, and if that doesn’t help, I’ll cut open a red cabbage deferring to its staggering beauty to align me with what is.  Modest Mussorgsky attended an art opening by his friend and then went home to compose Pictures at an Exhibition. I’d love for us to do this for someone.

Q: What is the best advice you’ve received?

A: JD: My mom always said, “This too shall pass.”  The expression gave me great relief in stressful times.  She had a way of only gently fluttering in the midst of a storm. I think we offered each other very different perspectives which, (for the most part!), enhanced our relationship. I love that.

NW: Hum when you sweep. Be daring. Go for it.

Q: When you are not working, where can we find you?

A: JD: Good work is play and good play is work. Therefore, I am hopeful that you will often find me doing these things simultaneously with my family and friends while doing therapy and teaching students or while simply tinkering around.

NW: Renovating the next phase of our house with my husband Bob and son Bo, who both have a surfs-up attitude for seeing art and travel.

Q: What does exhibiting at Artexpo New York 2024 mean to you?

A: JD: This venture is a very new and exciting opportunity as we/Resurrect Studio are only 3 years old!  Connecting with others through art is so pleasurable. It’s why working and playing in the studio with Nancy gives such pleasure to the artist in me. I believe this kind of reciprocity at ArtExpo New York will support our development and the development of Resurrect Studio.

NW: Let the games begin!

Tengetsu creates Mount Fuji Illustrated Scrolls, pictoral works that visualize the myths and legends associated with Mt.Fuji, Japan’s most iconic mountain. Get to know the artist and Artexpo New York 2024 Spotlight Recipient below.

Q: Introduce yourself — who you are and what is your vision as an artist?

A: We started with the idea of spreading The Mount Fuji Illustrated Scrolls created by Hōraku Nakamura to the world. Our mission is to spread Japanese myths and legends through art. In the future, we will begin to introduce more Japanese art and culture, including the work of Hōraku Nakamura’s son, sculptor Nakamura Ippei.

Q: What is your background?

A: I was born into a family of pottery artists and went to art college in Japan where I majored in painting. Tengetsu was just launched last year. I also run a game company and an education project for children, which I founded with my husband.

Q: What is your work philosophy and how does that impact your work?

A: My philosophy is “to do what pleases my soul the most.” Furthermore, for me, that joy is the encounter with art. Born in Japan to a family of pottery artists, my encounters with Japanese arts, crafts, and culture (including video games, manga, and anime) have shaped me. I am convinced that sharing this unique Japanese art and culture with the world and being inspired by great art from around the world will shape the style of Tengetsu in the future.

Q: What artist(s) inspire you?

A: We have a sincere respect for traditional Japanese painting, ceramics, crafts, and craftsmanship in Japanese culture, including manga, and anime.

Q: What is the best advice you’ve received?

A:「君よ芳しき楽しみに生きよイエーイ」

It was given to me by my father and means, “O thou, Live in the fragrant joy, yay!” It also includes the meaning of my father’s writer’s name.

Q: What does exhibiting at Artexpo New York 2024 mean to you?

A: I love the glamor and cultural atmosphere of New York City. It has been our dream since childhood to introduce Japanese art in New York. This is the best first step for us and it will be a great experience to meet many artworks, artists, and galleries at Artexpo New York.

Don’t miss Tengetsu at Booth 316 at Artexpo New York 2024.

Q: Introduce yourself — who you are and what your vision as an artist is?

A: My vision as an artist is to create captivating and impactful images that not only showcase the beauty of fashion but also tell compelling stories and leave a lasting impression on the viewers.

I am driven by a passion for storytelling and a meticulous approach to detail, which greatly influences my work as a photographer.

Q: What is your background?

A: Growing up on a rural farm in West Virginia and having a cultural heritage rooted in Northern Europe and Germany have greatly influenced my artistic vision. The simplicity of rural life and the connection with animals have shaped my perspective, while my heritage has given me a sense of pride and a connection to a rich artistic tradition.

These elements are reflected in my art, showcasing a deep appreciation for nature, a strong work ethic, and a connection to my roots.

I’m grateful for this opportunity and excited about the possibilities it holds.

Denise Allen, one of this year’s Artexpo New York Spotlight Recipients. Get to know the artist below.

Q: Introduce yourself — who you are and what your vision as an artist is?

A: I was born to be a Artist but actually didn’t realize it until I was in my late 20s. I was born in Bedford Stuyvesant Brooklyn, New York on Mother’s Day. My mother was a beautiful quiet woman and a great Seamstress. Her mother was also a great seamstress.

As a child, I was blessed with dreams that transported me to a realm of wonder and mystery. In these dreams, I encountered ethereal black sillhouette images of pure-hearted Ethopian people. Their beauty, kindness, and purity of soul left an incredible mark on my young heart.

One fateful day, as they approached me, I felt an overwhelming surge of love emanating from their presence. It was then that I realized their purpose.

Q: What is your work philosophy and how does that impact your work?

LOVE and supporting one another. With most of the money we made we were able to fund and support many people, non-profit profit organizations that help others that are down and out, poor folk in the street and the bowery and all kinds of people in dire need of help. Our aim for this upcoming distinguished show is that whatever sales we make 50 percent will go to a school in Ethiopia for the needy.

I honestly and truly love making story textile needlework art and paintings because in my heart I have so many stories full of love, peace, pain, tragedy, hate, and also stories of hope, faith, and taking risk. I know there will be other stories I’ll have to share. I want to share them through my love and gift of textile needleworked Folk Art.

Q: What artist(s) inspire you?

A: The Artist whose work absolutely inspires me is the artist that I am collaborating with in this show. Teklemariam.

Q: What is the best advice you’ve received?

A: The best advice I ever received was from the gallery owner who represented me many years ago. He was smart and experienced. He treated me very well and was the person who advanced my art career.

Q: When you are not working, where can we find you?

A: When I’m not working you can find me working on my little 23-acre farm in upstate New York in Palatine Bridge. It’s an Old Fashioned 17th-century colonial agricultural hamlet.

Q: What does exhibiting at Artexpo New York 2024 mean to you?

A: To be given the privilege and honor to participate in this important art fair is more than I hoped for. Unfortunately, my husband fell ill and for the past 8 years, I wasn’t able to do any art shows or events since he was basically bedbound and could no longer walk. He died 8 months ago. I love and miss him terribly. He retired 22 years ago from the Port Authority of NY & NJ. He was a Senior Draftsman there for 33 years. Our Son Richard Allen Jr. was killed in Tower 1 when the airplanes struck into the top of the towers. My beloved husband escaped by the skin of his teeth. He had to walk all the way home once he made it out. He served in the Army for six years after graduating from high school. He was given a Military Funeral with honors and respectively buried proudly and Honorably in Evergreen Cementary 10 minutes from where we live. God Bless you.

Artexpo New York returns to Pier 36 April 4-7. Here at Art Business News, we’ll be showcasing this year’s spotlight recipients.

Q: Introduce yourself — who are you and what is the vision of your gallery for artists?

A: I am Lucas Kokogian, founder and director of Galeria Azur. Our gallery’s vision is to serve as a platform for artists from diverse backgrounds to showcase their talents. We are committed to promoting inclusivity and equal opportunities in the art industry, believing that art should be accessible to everyone. Galeria Azur strives to create a space where emerging and mid-career artists can gain exposure and recognition.

Q: What is your background?

A: As a collector myself, I earned my spot in the art scene in Argentina by representing the greatest living artists. I opened Galería Azur in Buenos Aires in 2009. My connection with art started early – my family home was surrounded by art and antiques – and continued by approaching the artistic world from an academic perspective by studying Art History Management. After several years as a leader in Buenos Aires and Bogotá, I obtained peer respect and discernment and launched a career in the art auction world. Having established my reputation in the auction room, Galería Azur grew into the global network of galleries it is today.

Q: What is your work philosophy and how does that impact the gallery?

A: My work philosophy revolves around promoting inclusivity and equal opportunities in the art industry. This philosophy is deeply ingrained in Galeria Azur’s mission and operations. We strive to create a vibrant and diverse art community where artists from all backgrounds can thrive. My work ethic has been shaped by a combination of influences and experiences throughout my life. Inspired by my parents, I learned the values of hard work, dedication, and commitment. Over the years, I have had the privilege of learning from numerous mentors and colleagues in the art world, which has contributed to my strong and adaptable work ethic.

Q: What artist(s) inspire you?

A: I am inspired by artists who challenge boundaries and provoke thought through their work. Witnessing the transformative power of art motivates me to continue promoting emerging talents and fostering a more inclusive art community. Jon Gilchrist, one of the artists we represent inspires me every day. His personal odyssey transmutes into a visual symphony. His art—a mélange of abstract forms and bold colors—echoes the depth of his narrative. As a tall, young man navigating the complexities of identity as an African American individual in Houston, his canvases are replete with the emotional richness of his experiences. Works such as “Brave New World” and “Clearly Muddled Sky” transcend their titles, becoming emotional cartographies charting the terrain of his soul’s journey. He is constantly inviting the audience on a voyage of introspection.

I can sit here and name artists all day! Picasso inspires me as an artist for several reasons. Firstly, his unparalleled creativity and innovation in the realm of visual arts continue to astound and captivate me. Picasso’s ability to constantly push the boundaries of artistic expression, experimenting with various styles and techniques throughout his career, serves as a constant reminder of the limitless possibilities within the artistic process.

Q: What is the best advice you’ve received?

A: The best advice I’ve received is to embrace challenges as opportunities for growth, to seek mentorship from those who have walked the path before me, and to continuously cultivate a clear vision for what I want to achieve.

Q: When you are not working, where can we find you?

A: When I’m not working, you can find me exploring art galleries, attending cultural events, or spending time with my family and friends. (Also drinking a Dry Martini at The Beekman)

Q: What does exhibiting at Artexpo New York 2024 mean to you?

A: Exhibiting at Artexpo New York 2024 is an exciting opportunity to showcase Galeria Azur’s diverse roster of artists on a global platform. It allows us to connect with a broader audience and collaborate with talented artists from around the world. We are thrilled to participate in this prestigious event and share our passion for art with others.

Artexpo New York returns for its 47th edition to Pier 36 in Manhattan’s trending Lower East Side. And speaking of trending, the artists and galleries selected for this year’s coveted Spotlight Program are definitely doing something unique and forward-looking.

Throughout its nearly five historic decades of exhibiting contemporary and fine art, Artexpo New York has hosted the likes of Andy Warhol, Robert Rauschenberg, Keith Haring, Leroy Neiman, Basquiat, among many others; intensifying the discourse on today’s industry challenges and magnifying the very best the fine art world has to offer.

Artexpo New York 2024 will once again have an interesting mix of exhibiting galleries, art publishers and dealers, and artists from across the globe, showcasing original work of 1000+ artists that includes prints, paintings, drawings, sculptures, photography, ceramics, giclees, lithographs and glass works, among other contemporary and fine art.

This year’s Artexpo New York takes place April 4-7, 2024, at Manhattan’s newest destination for art, Pier 36. Each year, the fair’s special programs range from immersive artist-led Art Lab experiences to exciting Meet the Artist sessions.

From the amazing list of exhibitors, Artexpo’s curators present their Spotlight Program, providing collectors a focused look at several cutting-edge galleries and artists recognized for their skill and achievement in the visual arts.

Check out this year’s Spotlight Program recipients below!

Denise Allen – Booth 302

Denise Allen is a familiar name in the New York Outsider Art scene. Denise has worked through many challenges over the past 30 years to establish herself as a renowned folk artist, a genre sometimes referred to as Outsider Art. Allen’s work is so reminiscent of a rural, bygone era that many people believe it was created more than a century ago. As a contemporary folk artist, Allen fabricates dolls and needlework tapestries that address her African-American heritage. The history of slavery in the United States is a frequent theme, as are folklore figures and popular-culture icons. Even when treating more recent autobiographical themes, Allen casts her figures in an antiquated light. They wear nineteenth-century dresses, cook on wood-burning stoves, do their washing by hand, and participate in quilting bees. It is women – strong, brave, nurturing women, the backbone of the American family – who are the common thread in Allen’s work.

Galeria Azur – Booth 701

Galeria Azur is an international gallery network, including Madrid, Berlin, New York, Miami, and Buenos Aires. Galeria Azur made a significant impact with its inaugural collaboration with the Redwood Art Group at Red Dot 2023 with an impressive footprint and selection of artists’ work. With over a decade of expertise in modern and contemporary art scenes, Galeria Azur is committed to fostering the careers of both emerging and established artists. Their curated solo and group exhibitions create a vibrant, engaging environment that encourages artistic innovation and cross-cultural dialogue. Galeria Azur actively facilitates the growth of artistic careers. Their personalized services extend to bridging connections between artists and influential entities like museums, galleries, institutions, and collectors globally. The gallery’s vision is clear: they strive to secure international recognition for their artists and to craft a strong, sustainable market for their art.

Greg Lotus Gallery – Booth 112

Through the Lens: The Nature of Fashion Greg Lotus. Greg Lotus’s journey is one of contrasts and harmony. His lens captures the ephemeral beauty of the fashion world against the timeless backdrop of nature. His work is a tribute to the exquisite dance of light and shadow, angles and composition, breathing new life into the classical interplay of elements that have fascinated artists for centuries. In the bustling cities of Manhattan, Paris, and Miami, Lotus finds his muses, dressed in the creations of the world’s finest designers, yet it is in the silence of nature that he frames them. From the rarefied atmosphere of high-end fashion shoots to the tranquil realms where wild flora and fauna reign supreme, his photographs are a study of duality. A model’s poised elegance atop a rugged cliff, the sophistication of haute couture amidst the untamed wilderness, or the inclusion of an exotic animal on set—each image is a narrative unto itself. As Lotus traverses the globe, from the cobblestones of European streets to the seclusion of wild landscapes, he carries with him a vision: to showcase the symbiotic relationship between the creations of human ingenuity and the organic artistry of the earth.

Resurrect Studio – Booth S105

Resurrect Studio represents two artists who repurpose industrial materials into fine art, demonstrating innovation in the choice of materials and the environmental statement made through their art. The use of unusual materials and powerful environmental messages redefine artistic innovation. Artists Jean Davis and Nancy Wu works present an intriguing challenge to the way we think about waste and appeal. Each sculpture is a testament to transforming the devoid into the divine. The fundamental idea of the studio is the magic of metamorphosis, whereby industrial waste is transformed into eye-catching artworks that powerfully proclaim sustainability and creative brilliance. This combination of rough textures and elegant design tells tales of surprising grace and rebirth. Resurrect Studio is a revolution in art, going beyond convention and inspiring people to see the potential that lies within the abandoned. These sculptures are a call to action, reiterating our shared responsibility to protect our planet.

Tengetsu – Booth 316

The Artexpo New York exhibition of the Mount Fuji Illustrated Scrolls is the first step in promoting artist Hōraku Nakamura’s last four significant works to the world. Hōraku Nakamura, a ceramic artist and painter, began painting the mythology of the famous Izusan Shrine in 2008. After Mount Fuji and the Izu Peninsula were recognized by UNESCO as World Heritage Site and World Geopark respectively, Nakamura began working on a four-part Mount Fuji Illustrated Scrolls series. Just before his death in 2023, he completed the fourth work in the series. The Mount Fuji Illustrated Scrolls Quartet is a series of hanging scroll paintings created using traditional Japanese techniques of outlining in ink and then applying vivid colors in Japanese pigments. The work is then overlaid with a mist called “suyari-kasumi,” unique to Japanese painting, in gold ink. While this is a traditional Japanese painting technique, Nakamura’s colors are very pop and unusual for a Japanese painting. Since the original scrolls are protected as a cultural resource for museums and special exhibitions, reproductions of the originals will be available for sale, complete with gold leaf and mounting the same as the original.

Check out this year’s Spotlight Program recipients below!

Alessandra Silvaberg Studio – Booth 725

From the vibrant streets of Sao Paulo to workshops in NYC, Florida, Brazil, and California, Silvaberg’s camera has been an extension of her soul. With an innate ability to capture the essence of any subject that began early in life, she has nurtured her skill both formally and through self-exploration.

Guided by a deep spiritual connection to humans, animals, and nature, Silvaberg always aims to photograph the ubiquitous beauty around us. Her mission is to use art photography as a bridge, fostering empowerment, unity, and inspiration beyond boundaries of race, gender, and orientation. Through the lens, she immortalizes moments and emotions, drawing the viewer into the artwork’s holistic embrace.

Carol Hartman – Booth 230

Hartman, an American artist renowned for her textured large-scale paintings, masterfully blends layers of paint to oscillate between concealment and revelation. Each large-scale painting (some interactive) is a physical record of a specific experience identified in life. The paintings are begun very loosely as they relate to a particular experience — but they begin to speak, and Hartman reveals their message in the final layering.

Born in Montana and deeply rooted in the arts, she spent over two decades showcasing electronic installations about biases from California to New York. Since 2009, her oil paintings exploring human experiences have graced galleries in the U.S. and Europe.

Edna Oar Young – Booth 625

Edna Oar Young, a renowned dimensional metal sculpture artist, draws her inspiration from a vibrant palette of colors and a diverse array of art mediums. Her distinctive creations have graced national publications like House Beautiful, Elle Décor, and Illustrator Home Decorating. Additionally, prestigious institutions such as the Smithsonian Institution, Museum of American Folk Art, and the Baseball Hall of Fame have sought her expertise for commissioned works. Among her accolades, she takes pride in the Editor’s Choice Award from Colonial Home Magazine.

Edna’s roots trace back to rural Western New York, where she was engrossed in a world of unique antiques, courtesy of her parents, who were dedicated antique dealers. This early immersion in timeless artistry has left an indelible mark on her creations. As she looks ahead, Edna remains fervently dedicated to crafting exquisite dimensional works, continually taking cues from nature’s mesmerizing hues.

Henry Blond – Booth 902

Henry Blond, a master of expressive portraiture, stands out in the contemporary art scene for his distinctive approach to oil painting. He weaves a narrative with each stroke, opting for a carefully curated limited palette. His broad and dynamic brushstrokes are a testament to his commitment to the medium, ensuring every piece is imbued with energy and movement.

Blond’s work operates in a space of tension and harmony between the fully realized and the merely suggested. This balance establishes an engrossing dialogue within each painting, a conversation that resonates with intensity and extends beyond the canvas’s confines. Drawing inspiration from life, memories, and human connections, Blond captures the raw honesty of the human condition. He delves deep, exploring the myriad emotions, vulnerabilities, strengths, and intricacies that make up the human experience. He invites viewers to not just see but feel and connect with the stories painted on his canvas.

Julia C R Gray – Booth 229

Julia C R Gray, is a native California artist who sculpts ceramic torsos with rich layers of form, texture and painted narrative imagery.  Her artwork portrays multilayered messages, starting with vulnerability of the oceans and our bodies, balanced with the dialectic message of the power of the oceans and the strength of women’s bodies. Gray’s artwork also comments on contemporary life, personal experience and consciousness of nature.

Gray’s ceramic torsos are individualized through hand-painted glaze images and surface texture of layered ceramic slip. Her sculpture series SHE-Sea Wisdom features ceramic female torsos attached to bases of coral-inspired clay shapes. The body’s opalescent form speaks to the mystery of being, and deeply embedded coral patterns with real gold accents symbolizes nature’s preciousness. After texturing the outer surface, Gray carves holes into the clay to give the viewer superficial visual access within the body structure where red glaze is painted. The final gold and luster glazes add an understanding that this subject is treasured.

Meet the artist and Artexpo New York 2023 Spotlight Recipient Jael Roznicki. Artexpo New York takes place from March 30th to April 2nd at Pier 36.

Q: Introduce yourself — who you are and what is your vision as an artist?

A: I am Jael Roznicki. I live in Edmonton, Alberta Canada and I am a contemporary abstract oil painter. It is my hope as an artist to reconnect the viewers with their childhood imaginations.  I typically paint in large-scale bright colors and love hearing what people “see” in my work.  I hope one day to own my own exclusive gallery for my work.

Q: What is your background?

A: my art career emerged from a few different avenues of creative work. I have a background in Graphic Design, and my superpower seems to be having a keen sense of spacial recognition and balance. I completed my interior design certification and completed a number of large-scale projects, which inevitably ended in picking art for clients.  Struggling to find the perfect piece led me to create my own work, which I found immensely beneficial for my mental health, and suddenly an artist was created.

Q: What is your work philosophy and how does that impact your work?

A: My work philosophy is simple, “keep painting until you love the piece so much that you don’t want to sell it”. I find that both the creation and collection of art is a very emotional experiences and when your work finds a collector there is an instant feeling of connection.   I try very hard to be as authentic and vulnerable in my art as possible. I typically name my pieces with very precise titles that reflect the work, and the place I am in life at the moment.  If you follow my work you will really get to know me as a person, and I love how this resonates with my collectors.

Q: What artist(s) inspire you?

A: One of the current artists that inspired me is, Claire Desjardin, a fellow Canadian and woman artist. She continues to reinvent her work and also has a strong commitment to bright, bold, fearless colors. Digging my teeth further into the art world, I have been amazed at the courage of artists like Hans Hofmann, Helen Frankenthaler, and especially Hilma af Klint. What speaks to me most about their work is how bold and unapologetic they were.

Q: What is the best advice you’ve received?

A: “Keep creating” and “don’t be scared of what people think.”  I was painting for quite a few years before I even showed my work in public. It worried me that this special thing that brought me joy, would be diminished by the opinions of other people. These two simple messages were what allowed me to bring my works to the world.

Q: When you are not working, where can we find you?

A: I enjoy my cabin in Montana. I like to go every month or so and smell the big old pine trees and walk around the property with my four Bulldogs. I spend more time than I should in a comfy chair in my living room with a good coffee and a book. And on weekends you would probably find me at Home Depot on a “date” with my loving husband, Stuart.

Q: What does exhibiting at Artexpo New York 2023 mean to you?

A: I am very excited to be exhibiting at Artexpo New York. This is my second show in the United States, and I am really focused on growing my collector base and getting a wide range of feedback on my work. The New York show is close to my heart because of all the art and museums there. It feels like a big challenge to see how the New Yorkers respond to my work.  I am eager to meet the other artists at the show also.  I believe that “sometimes you win, and sometimes you learn” and I think New York will be a huge success for me either way.

Artexpo New York returns for its 46th edition to Pier 36 in Manhattan’s trending Lower East Side. And speaking of trending, the artists and galleries selected for this year’s coveted Spotlight Program are definitely doing something unique and forward-looking.

Get to know one of this year’s Spotlight Recipients, D’Arcy Bellamy, below!

Q: Introduce yourself — who you are and what your vision as an artist is?

A: My name is D’Arcy Bellamy. I am an object maker. I create abstract (often kinetic) sculptures from steel pipe.  I start with a raw steel pipe in diameters from 8” – 22” and I work in a subtractive method (more like a stone carver), cutting, bending and grinding, removing material, and adding only space until the form reveals itself.  My primary subject matter is spirals, geometric patterns, the human form, and plants and animals.  I aim to surprise and delight the viewer and engage the senses of sight, touch, and wonder

Q: What is your background?

A: I have a BA and an MBA. I have a working background in Sales and Design in the Kitchen and Bath industry.  I started making art 20 years ago at a community art center in Dallas, TX.  My art-making has been self-directed since then. I have made and sold sculptures in Dallas, TX, Aspen, CO, and Boise, ID.

Q: What is your work philosophy and how does that impact your work?

A: With each piece, my goal is to accomplish something I haven’t done before.  To push the material a little further, to add an element or detail I haven’t incorporated before, to try a new finish, to work larger or smaller.  The mild steel pipe I use often has a coat of surface rust when I get it.  I often try and preserve the rusted surface.  I don’t strive for the appearance of perfection in my completed work, instead, I appreciate the aesthetic of Wabi-Sabi, that of seeing the beauty of things that are imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete.

Q: What artist(s) inspire you?

A: In no particular order…

Michelangelo, David Smith, Anthony Gormley, Tony Cragg, Fletcher Benton, Anish Kapor, Mark Di Suvero, Isamu Noguchi, Andrew Goldsworthy, Richard Serra, Alexander Calder, Ernest Hemingway, Joseph Conrad, Jack London, Joseph Cambell.

Q: What is the best advice you’ve received?

A: Keep going, keep making art, and don’t quit. Art doesn’t have to be perfect. Make art that is your art, not a derivative of someone else’s art.  Don’t be afraid to make mistakes.

Q: When you are not working, where can we find you?

A: At the gym, a yoga class, the dog park, or walking in the Boise foothills.

Q: What does exhibiting at Artexpo New York 2023 mean to you?

A: Exhibiting at Artexpo New York 2023 is an exciting opportunity to display my work on the largest stage to date.  After 20 years of making and showing, I have confidence my work is extremely strong and completely unique. I look forward to hearing feedback from a larger, broader, and possibly more sophisticated audience. NYC is the center of the art world, I am excited to connect with other artists, collectors, and galleries
