“Mi Gente,” Leonor Anthony

This piece is part of the collection “El Vuelo de la Semilla (The Flight of the Seed).” It is inspired by my personal experience as a Cuban immigrant. Having left Cuba as a 5-year-old child, my roots were severed but not erased. These are my people. They are textured, nuanced, worn out, real—but filled with life and soul; simple in their elegance and beauty. This is my homage to them.

"Canines and Color," Iris Scott“Canines and Color” was inspired by the dog paparazzi sessions Iris embarks on. Armed with her Canon and a fast shutter speed, Iris loves to wade knee-deep into the San Diego surf to catch the movement-saturated moments of black labs shedding their water weight. The surface of this piece is heavy with oil texture, and Iris takes finger painting to a level the world has never seen. Iris makes her color-saturated canvases burst with movement using a form of textural Impressionism all her own, and without using any brushes. Iris Scott’s finger paintings hang in private, public, and corporate collections worldwide.

This piece, “La Extincion Del Simbolo Nacional (Extinction of Our National Symbol),” is one of 30 drawings in Veronica Villarreal’s series titled “Osseous.” In the series, Villarreal explores the anatomy of animals and addresses the question of what these species might look like in the future. Villarreal seeks to bring awareness to hunting, the black market, and the meat industry with her drawings.

“We are slowly eliminating all the beauty in our animals, and if we keep doing so, all that will be left will be bones,” says Villarreal.

I am the result of a long line of artisans and teachers. I am a waterman, a chef, a lover of life, a spirit walker, and much more. Between the folds of light and dark, magic plays. Through the medium of photography, I search to find those moments filled with magic and suspend them in time.”

With my work, I seek to capture that moment in time so that it cannot be lost—a moment that I can be connected with the water for as long as I look at that sculpture or piece of jewelry. I can feel the gentle flow of the stream or the excitement of the explosion of water as it breaks on the rocks. I can even become the water if I choose.”

“Beach Hibiscus a work from my ‘Seaburbia’ series exploring the cultural memory and heritage of the quintessential Australian beach house. Patterned and layered in acrylic and oil, the work achieves a weatherworn texture recalling the erosion of matter over time and the exquisite residues of nostalgia and decay. Composed from my own photographs, reminiscing retro color I am documenting the essence of coastal living lost to time and development and the value of a more simple way of life.

Susan Schmidt is a fine arts painter and graphic designer making the transition from award-winning illustrator to fine artist painting at an easel while raising a young family. Schmidt has exhibited her works nationally since 1998 in solo and selected exhibitions and since 2012 internationally in New York, Hong Kong and Istanbul; Susan Schmidt currently resides in Noosa Heads, Australia.
