Born in Izmir to architect parents, Dilek Uzunoglu Ors’s interest in painting began at a young age. After her undergraduate studies in economics and a postgraduate degree in business administration, she worked in managerial positions in various multinational companies.

Ors had the opportunity to continue her interest in painting during the pandemic and developed a passion for abstract expressionism which led her to further develop her talent as an abstract painter. She is known for her bold use of color and complex layering. Her abstract style allows the viewer to have a visual experience that evokes feelings of well-being, joy of life, and dreaming.

Ors explains her inspiration and process: “I take my inspiration from nature, music, cinema, literature, and stories of everyday people. I am trying to interpret the world the way I see it, and I am in a continuous search for freedom and balance. I love to work with different materials and tools including those recycled, use uncommon color matches, and create texture. I am in search of more dynamics and light in painting and experimenting with different materials and techniques. In my working process, I am following the unconscious. The colors are used autonomously and give the drive for the creation. I am working with multilayers and with recycled paints and found objects, which are integrated into the canvas to create depth and texture.”

Ors’ goal is to create a personal work containing variations that never end, always trying to continue the process of creating and sharing. Art becomes a journey for the artist to seek meaning and self-fulfillment. Her paintings consist of layers and thickness, some with more transparent colors and spontaneous brush movements. Through her art, she hopes to spread her energy and joy of life with other people.

Influenced by Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, and Damian Hirst, she revels in their experimentation with various methods and mediums, and how they were able to create works that were unlike anything that had been seen before. Ors aspires to do the same with her use of color and layering techniques.

Q: Who are you and what do you do?

A: My name is Hande Uğur a.k.a. Handy Queen and I am an interdisciplinary artist born in Istanbul, if I have to say boldly, I declared myself a visual philosopher.

Q: What is your background?

A: For as long as I can remember, I’ve loved painting and making various types of art. I graduated from Hacettepe University, Department of Sociology. Meanwhile, I attended drawing classes at the same university. After graduation, I first worked as a jewelry designer, but later on I realized what I really wanted to do was to just tell a story to an audience through art.

Q: How do you work?

A: I use a variety of media to describe the current events of our time.

I consider myself as a storyteller. I usually like to tell about current issues in my works and connect them to an old story known to everyone. My favorite topics are dependence on technology and social networks, pollution and climate change, female identities, and celebrities in popular culture. I try to make the audience feel the exact emotion I want to convey through different media, such as acrylic paint, collage, and lenticular print, which I love very much. My works are humorous but serious at the same time. And that is the strength of my style.

Q: What art and artist do you most identify with? How have they influenced you?

A: I have been influenced by many artists. I’m usually attracted to their provocative and playful styles. Hieronymus Bosch, Rene Magritte, Nancy Fouts, Barbara Kruger, Todd Schorr, Paco Comet, Ye Hangxing and Mario Soria are some of my favorites. The way they compel me to think also inspires me.

Q: What has been your favorite experience so far as an artist?

A:  I have participated in many international fairs and exhibitions. But my favorite experience is to see people welcome my artwork into their homes and in their lives.

Q: What is the best advice you have received?

A: I think Andy Warhol gave the best advice given to any artist. “Don’t think about making art, just get it done. Let everyone else decide if it’s good or bad, whether they love it or hate it. While they are deciding, make even more art.” I’m solemnly trying to follow his advice.

Q: When you are not working, where can we find you?

A: I always say “I am a painter. My goal is to create unique and high-quality art that can light a spark in the hearts of the audience. My studio is the place that makes me feel free and connected.” Even though my studio has become my home due to long working hours, if I am not working, I like to visit new exhibitions in town, try to go to see a new play, spend time with my family and friends.

Q: How has your career as an artist shifted during the past two years? And did the pandemic have an influence on your art?

A: The pandemic has affected me like everyone else. It made me stop and understand what was important to the world, to my family, to myself. Curfews caused everyone to fall behind from their jobs and get bored, but on the contrary, it made me work harder. The past two years have been very fast and improving for me, I participated in many exhibitions, connected with many artists, and found opportunities to collaborate with various brands. We lost our loved ones, and I am very sorry for that. In the end, I want to believe that art will heal us.

REPRESENTED BY ACT CONTEMPORARY, SPECTRUM MIAMI, BOOTH 1213

Talip Keser will be exhibiting with ACT Contemporary at Spectrum Miami this December. Get to know the artist below.

Q: Who are you and what do you do?

A: I am Talip Keser, an artist in Turkey. I want to share my works with the whole world.  My main goal is to make my work reach larger audiences. I joined this year Beijing Art Biennale, Carrousel Du Louvre in Paris, and Spectrum Miami. Next year, my goal is to exhibit at the Milan Art Fair, Artexpo New York, and again during Art Basel Week at Spectrum Miami.

I am very happy to participate to Spectrum Miami this year with my representative ACT Contemporary, Booth1213. Come and say hello.

Q: What is your background?

A: I was born in Usak, Turkey. I graduated from the Department of Fine Arts in Muğla Sıtkı Koçman University.

I started painting since I was a child. From 2007-2010, I worked at the Emin Özdemir Atelier; then from 2010-2012, at the Orhun Kara Atelier. And since 2014, I have worked in my own studio in Uşak.

Q: How would you describe your artwork?

A: My work is abstract painting. Expressing myself with colors rather than figures creates a more liberal space for me. Meanings and expressions of colors are stronger statements for me, and it creates impact in my art.

Q: What art and artist do you most identify with? How have they influenced you?

A: The artists that influenced me the most were Pollock, Basquiat, and Van Gogh. Their libertarian spirit impressed me a great deal.

Q: What has been your favorite experience so far as an artist?

A:  I was very impressed by being an inspiration to the children around me. It is very important for me that the children around me can reach their dreams more easily and be successful in their efforts.

Q: What is the best advice you have received?

A: The best advice I’ve ever gotten is to keep going. In the first years, I had a lot of financial difficulties. I saw how difficult it was to live in a small town and be an abstract artist here. Finally, they just accepted me — and I have been working nonstop for my dreams, which are my biggest motivation.

Q: When you are now working, where can we find you?

A: I live in Uşak, Turkey. I have a studio here. It’s a small city and it’s an honor for me to introduce my work to the world.

Q: How has your career as an artist shifted during the past two years? And did the pandemic have an influence on your art?

A: I did a lot of business sales due to the pandemic. And the pandemic did have a very positive impact. People saw blank walls in their homes, and it gave rise to an opportunity to purchase artwork.
